When my father turned his back on his marriage and abandoned his responsibilities to my sister and me, I happened to overhear him utter a phrase that would echo hauntingly in my mind for years to come: “Robert will never amount to anything.” Those words struck like a cold dagger, piercing my psyche. Despite carving out a life filled with accomplishments that far exceed anything he ever envisioned for me, I find that in the shadows of my mind, his dismissive words linger like a dark cloud. In moments of uncertainty and challenging choices, they resurface, amplifying my doubts and whispering threats to my self-worth.
